Indwelling Catheters -Catheterization Supplies
Indwelling catheters, which are also commonly called Foleys, are flexible tubes that are inserted into the urethra and then into the bladder in order to relieve pressure and reduce the risk of urinary tract infections. Indwelling catheters are available in silicone, silicone-coated latex, or silver-coated latex, all of which can provide long-lasting relief for a week and even up to 30 days. Those who are prone to infections or clotting disorders may wish to change their catheters more frequently.
Foleys are available as both male catheters and female catheters and are held in place by a small balloon that is inflated with sterile water. As the catheter bag is filled, the urine can then be tested as needed for infection or kidney function. The indwelling catheter may be used for those who have had spinal trauma or certain types of surgery, those who suffer from bladder dysfunction, those who have urethral obstructions, or those with urine retention or other urological disorders.
